Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club – Volunteers’ Week 2024

Volunteers have always played a key role in our club structure throughout the years, more so now than ever.

As our club continues to grow, the commitment and dedication from our volunteers is extremely valued.

In our four-piece competitive section, we have Lorna and Lisa, who volunteer numerous hours weekly to help our gymnasts and coaching team. Both ex gymnasts, their continued passion for the sport, and knowledge is a great asset to the club.

To date, Lorna has volunteered at our club for an incredible 17 years and counting! Lorna became involved with the club through her two young daughters and has continued her commitment with us by attending training every Saturday to work alongside the elite squad with Head Coach Steven.

As an ex Scottish Commonwealth gymnast, her experience and knowledge are valued greatly by the gymnasts who Lorna has an amazing and positive relationship with. We celebrated this fantastic commitment to our club by awarding Lorna with Volunteer of the year in 2022.

Lorna is also a Scottish gymnastics assessor which has been very rewarding for the club, as we have been able to gain more members to our coaching team. This also meant that assessments could be held at our facility, making it more accessible for people within Dumfries and Galloway to become qualified coaches. Lorna is also a qualified floor and vault judge, and volunteers her time judging at our Annual Inhouse competitions, along with helping out at our fundraising events.

Lisa, also an ex competitive gymnast, has volunteered at our club for an outstanding 18 years and counting. Lisa donates her time two days a week, to work alongside coaches and gymnasts in our 4-piece competitive section whilst also being a member of our Board of Trustees.

The coaches always appreciate having an extra pair of hands to help and love having Lisa come in to work with. Lisa works across all 4-piece groups, offering help where needed. The gymnasts love having Lisa in and are always excited to see her.

Again, we celebrated this fantastic commitment to our club by awarding Lisa with Volunteer of the year in 2023. Lisa is also a qualified floor and vault judge, and volunteers her time judging at our in-house competitions, along with helping at our fundraising events.

Out with their volunteer hours, Lorna works full time as a lead gymnastics coach at DG1 and Lisa works full time as a physio at Dumfries Royal Infirmary. Our club is extremely thankful for both Lisa and Lorna, as their voluntary work helps keep our club thriving. With 35 years of volunteering between them, they are truly are an inspiration.
